Getting Ready for Colorado Gives Day and GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday and Colorado Gives Day are coming up in less than two months. GivingTuesday is November 27, 2018 and CO Gives Day is a week later on December 4, 2018. These are both events designed to motivate people to donate to their favorite nonprofit organizations. This collective effort can build momentum for youth and education nonprofits by promoting the cause, improving transparency, and celebrating.

Because it’s a specific day that you can give, it may seem too early to promote it.  It’s not! In less than a month you can actually schedule your donation on ColoradoGives.org. Here are some ideas which are usable today:

  • I think, I hope, most people know there’s an upcoming election. My ballot is going to have several options to pay more taxes—from amendments to mill levys to bond issues. Many will help my schools. Help educate voters and potential donors by describing how this is separate from what you provide. Bonds, for example, can only be used for construction, maintenance or infrastructure needs. Chalkbeat makes the distinction between a mill and a bond here.

  •  Content—I’m currently working on case studies and interviews so that there will be plenty of content and transparency into the organizations I serve. This helps people understand the “why” these organizations do what they do. I’ll really start pushing these at the end of this month.

  • Use the hashtag #COGivesDay or #GivingTuesday in social media posts.

  • Celebrate it – have a party for donors and beneficiaries on the big day.

  • Thank yous—think ahead about a thank you process, so the thank yous will go out quickly. It’s not original, but a thank you call is always appreciated.

  • Both organizations provide logos, email templates, banner ads and more. Use these free resources as much as possible. Here’s GivingTuesday’s complete toolkit and the ColoradoGives Day toolkit.

Good luck! Please let me know if you need any help.
